I decided to try a little light painting on my car tonight. So armed with my camera and lens, a tripod, and a flashlight; I headed out in the night to do my thing. My family looked at me like I was crazy when I was put on a black shirt at bed time. This was my first attempt at lighting something as big as a car with only a flashlight. I have lit smaller object this way, like my bass and the cross for the Dominican Republic mission trip but lighting a car was a little more of a challenge.
After pressing the shutter button I had to run around the car shinning the light where I wanted it before the shutter closed again. Making sure the light was not pointed at the camera during that time was tricky. I would have liked to of had a flashlight with a narrower beam for certain parts. I can imagine a photographer that does a lot of light painting having a tool belt with many different size flashlight in it, like a painter with would with brushes.
Great share. I am trying to teach myself light painting. Thank you for the advice, everything applied has at least been a fun learning process. I recently wrote a post of light painting videos and the history behind the art form: http://www.real.com/resources/light-painting-videos
